All-on-4®: Proper Care, Cleaning and Maintenance

As with other aspects of oral health, the All-on-4 prosthesis needs to be cleaned and cared for properly. If your oral hygiene is well maintained and you have minimal tartar buildup, then the All-on-4 prosthesis does not need to be removed and you may simply clean around it. You may use toothpaste and mouthwash to clean the prosthesis. Our office also recommends using a water flosser or air-flosser twice daily.

Once a year our team will take needed X-rays to assess the condition of your All-on-4 prosthesis and implants. Depending upon the needs of the patient, annually or semiannually, we will give you a thorough, professional cleaning and exam. If you still have natural teeth, then the All-on-4 will be cleaned at the same time as your regularly scheduled cleanings. If there is significant tartar buildup, our office will need to remove the prosthesis for proper cleaning. You can anticipate the removal of the prosthesis every other year or so. The screws will need to be replaced per the manufacturer’s recommendation or per wear-and-tear, which averages every other time the prosthesis is removed.

The All-on-4 prosthesis can potentially last a lifetime, though there are no guarantees because the longevity of the All-on-4 is dependent upon a number of factors, including how well it is cared for, the consistency and quality with which oral hygiene is maintained and the materials the prosthesis is made from. To protect the All-on-4 prosthesis, some patients choose to invest in a night guard.
